Artist's Statement
My work is wheel-thrown and fired in a natural gas soda kiln. I use both porcelain and stoneware clay and fire to 2300 degrees. I formulate my own glazes and intentionally decorate my work while pursuing the unexpected results of a soda firing. Although I produce a variety of work, my passion and area of interest is in producing large-scale vases and jars, (3-6 feet in height). Large forms are spectacular canvas on which to show the organic beauty of soda-fired clay. I am always trying to create vessels that are timeless. I want them to at once to reference the past and yet seem to be very modern. I am influenced by both the pre-modern Chinese and Japanese ceramics and at the same time modern abstract painting.
